Primarily, this study identified significant factors that predict children’s eating behavior. Further, it examined whether mothers’ eating habits moderated the relations between children’s temperament and eating behavior. The study participants included Korean mother-child (aged three to five years) dyads (N=525). The study used maternal report data via survey questionnaires on children’s temperament and eating behavior as well as maternal eating habits. In a series of hierarchical multiple regression analyses, all the sub-factors on children’s temperament and maternal eating habits were found to be significant predictors of overall children’s eating behavior. Additionally, maternal eating habits had moderating effects on the relations between children’s temperament and their eating behavior. Finally, the implications for future research and practice were discussed.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship among burnout, organizational effectiveness, and job satisfaction of preschool teachers and find the predictors of job satisfaction of preschool teachers. The questionnaire about burnout, organizational effectiveness, and preschool teachers’ job satisfaction was administered to 233 preschool teachers working in kindergartens and daycare centers located in S and K provinces in Korea. Pearson’s correlation and multi-regression analysis was conducted to analyze the data. The results of this study are as follows: first, there is a negative relationship between burnout and job satisfaction and a positive relationship between organizational effectiveness and job satisfaction; second, burnout was found to be a negative predictive variable and organizational effectiveness was found to be a positive predictive variable for preschool teachers’ job satisfaction. The results of this study could be used as basic data for finding ways to improve job satisfaction of preschool teachers.

Studies on basic psychological needs (BPN) have previously been conducted on adults and adolescents. The purpose of this study was to measure Korean children’s BPN in a developmentally appropriate way and to determine the effects of mothers’ and grandparents’ parenting on children’s BPN. The sample included 213 children (51.64% female) recruited from 4 kindergartens in Seoul. The analyses relied on structural equation modeling and bootstrapping procedures, and the results supported the model. In particular, the results show that needs related to competence and relatedness were high for Korean children, whereas needs for autonomy were lowest, even with the mother’s perceived high level of autonomy-supportive parenting. Grandparents’ autonomy-supportive parenting did not affect children’s BPN, whereas grandparents’ autonomy-control parenting had a negative effect on the children’s BPN through the mother’s autonomy-control parenting.

In this paper, the search for historical discontinuities, ruptures, and unexpected continuity of the discourses (re)defining Korean-American children and their education aims to challenge the belief that the knowledge produced by these discourses is transparent and authentic. The poststructuralist approach intends to investigate and challenge the legitimacy of the dominant image and narrative of Korean- American children as a highly achieving model minority. Furthermore, this paper reveals intersecting discourses, such as yellow peril and model minority, and Koreanness and global citizenship that influence how Korean-American children are envisioned. This paper thus aims to unlearn the inherent dominant mode of understanding Korean-American childhood.

A self-guide worksheet is an educational material that can be produced for museums to help children appreciate exhibits and change their perception of history and culture. They not only change perceptions of history and culture but are also suitable for children to appreciate artifacts in various ways. Therefore, this paper develops a self-guide worksheet for kindergarteners who have been a neglected audience in educational research for museums. Considering children’s growth development and Bloom's taxonomy of cognitive domains and corresponding questions, we first drew the research direction by reviewing prior research and theories and then analyzed the exhibition gallery. Three experts from the learning team of the Early Childhood Education Promotion Agency were commissioned. Based on this feedback, we introduced the final version of the worksheet. This study aimed to develop a self-guide worksheet for kindergarteners, for a permanent exhibition gallery. This paper will contribute to future self-guide worksheet development in the museum context. Furthermore, the developed self-guide worksheet has been verified by early-childhood education experts in terms of appropriateness and difficulty level for children.

Studies of media exposure in early childhood debate the negative and positive effects of media on students’ learning skills. This study attempted to clarify the structural relationships among media exposure, parental interaction, and school readiness in early childhood. The participants comprised 1,620 five-year-old children and their mothers or main caregivers, from the Panel Study on Korean Children (PSKC). The statistics of the structural equation modeling were analyzed by using Mplus 8.4 and SPSS 20.0. The results show that young children’s exposure to media have significant direct effects on parental interaction and school readiness. Moreover, parental interaction exhibited significant indirect effect on the relationship between media exposure and school readiness. The analysis results show that although media exposure in early childhood may have side effects on school readiness, which predicts successful transition to school age, these can be offset with adequate parental interaction. These results can be applied to establish media technology usage standards for young children and their parents. The study suggests that most young children can come up with countermeasures about correct media use as they are often exposed to media, which can also contribute to their successful preparation for elementary school.
